Conceding and refuting a point

RECONOCER Y CONTRARRESTAR PUNTOS DE VISTA
Ser capaz de reconocer y rebatir puntos de vista diferentes a los tuyos es una de las habilidades que debes tener para obtener un C1. Por eso, hoy discutiremos este tema.
Sé que pueden ser desconocidas, así que vamos a definir estas dos funciones (conceding and refuting) y ver los ejemplos en las que se pueden usar.
Mientras debates, debes presentar un argumento, y, en algún momento, admitir que la otra parte tiene un punto de vista diferente. Por eso, "conceding a point" significa reconocer que el punto de vista de otra persona es verdadero o relevante. Hacer concesiones es importante porque demuestran que comprendes los diferentes puntos de vista.
Pero… nunca puedes mencionar el punto de vista del otro sin rebatir. "A refutation", sirve para demostrar que los demás argumentos son incorrectos, o, al menos, explicas por qué no estás de acuerdo con éstos.
A menudo, estas dos funciones van juntas; primero tienes en cuenta el punto de vista de los demás para, seguidamente, rebatirlo.
Por ejemplo:
- I agree that TV could sometimes show inappropriate content to children. On the other hand, you cannot say that there are no beneficial educational programs that help children study.
- It’s true that we working from home is more comfortable for most people. However, it is important that we go to the office at least once or twice a week to discuss some important issues.
- Even though it has been raining every day for 2 months and there’s been a lot of floods, we should acknowledge that the rains are good for agriculture.
Conceder importancia a un punto de vista y rebatirlo es muy común en todo tipo de debates, incluidos los temas políticos y sociales.
CONCEDER IMPORTANCIA Y REBATIR DE MANERA EFECTIVA
Primero, hay que resumir los contraargumentos y luego elimina las concesiones lo antes posible, porque dejarlas hasta el final debilitará tu propio argumento. Finalmente, rebate y respalda tus opiniones con evidencias confiables siempre que sea posible.
Ahora te muestro qué expresiones puedes usar para hacerlo:
1. Resume el contra-argumento.
Habla sobre el punto de vista que quieres rebatir, con la ayuda de declaraciones generales.
- It is (commonly believed/ known/ reported/ thought that...
- People believe/ think/ know/ feel/ insist/ confirm that...
- Many groups of people have argued that...
- ...(name of the person/ people) believes that...
- We all know that...
2. Concede importancia a otros puntos de vista.
Puedes hacerlo para demostrar que comprendes el argumento de la otra persona y reconoce que en parte es cierto, pero no estás totalmente de acuerdo. Puedes utilizar “concession clause” para hacer esta declaración:
- Although/ Even though it's true that...
- While it's obvious/ evident/ clear/ likely that...
- I have to admit that...
- I concede that...
- I agree that...
- True as it is, ...
3. Rebatir el punto de vista.
Finalmente, es el momento de argumentar y respaldar tu opinión de manera confiable y creíble. Después de "although/even though/while clause", puedes utilizar una de las siguientes propuestas para continuar la oración y completar tu idea.
- ...we schould take into consideration...
- we must also remember that...
- ...it's also important/ evident/ likely/ clear/ true that...
- ...it's more important/ vital to...
Si has hablado sobre el punto de vista del otro en una sola frase, puedes rebatir con la ayuda de una palabra o frase de enlace. Puedes utilizar uno de los siguientes:
- Nevertheless...
- On the other hand,...
- However, ...
- On the contrary, ...
4. Respalda tu punto de vista.
Tras haber rebatido una idea, debes argumentar tu punto de vista expresando tu opinión y evidencia para hacerlo creíble. Puedes utilizar frases de opinión, como:
- I believe that...
- I feel that...
- I think...
- It is clear that...
- It is important...
Ahora, lo vas a ver todo junto a través de algunos ejemplos. ¡Fíjate!
Ejemplos:
- It is commonly believed that a lot of videogames are violent and they contribute to children bringing violence to schools. Although, there’s been research that shows clear evidence of violence being present in videogames and desensitizing children, we should take into consideration that most teens are capable of differentiating between good and bad and that they should always take responsibility for their actions. I believe that violence depends more on a socio-economic status of the family where a teen lives that on whether or not he plays videogames.
- Everyone knows that it is incorrect to test products on animals. I agree that animal cruelty should ideally be abolished and prevented. Nevertheless, we should remember that products should still be tested somehow. Even though they have already invented computerized testing, no one knows how reliable this one will turn out to be. It’s clear that for now, unfortunately we don’t have a reliable alternative to animal testing.
- The board of directors believes that this year’s budget should be cut. I feel that while it might be a good idea for the stakeholders, it might affect the quality of the product. It’s clear that with the product of inferior quality, less people will buy it and it might damage our reputation.
