Describing someone’s intelligence

INTRODUCCIÓN
En esta lección vamos a ver frases más sofisticadas sobre los adjetivos de personalidad que podemos utilizar para hablar sobre la inteligencia de alguien y también las diferentes palabras y expresiones que se pueden usar para hacerlo.
Como sabes, solemos usar adjetivos para describir a las personas, pero éstos también pueden ser diferentes, por ejemplo para el nivel C1, ya que tienes que usar adjetivos más complejos, compuestos, phrasal verbs y expresiones idiomáticas.
ADJETIVOS DE PERSONALIDAD: INTELIGENCIA
En primer lugar, vamos a hacer referencia a las personas intelectuales y cómo podemos llamarlas.
CARACTERÍSTICAS POSITIVAS
Como característica positiva, puedes mencionar que alguien puede ser brillante (bright), inteligente (smart), astuto (shrewd), superdotado (gifted) o talentoso (talented).
Todos estos adjetivos describen a una persona con gran inteligencia, pero vamos a ver la diferencia entre éstos.
Astuto (shrewd), significa que alguien muestra ingenio en asuntos prácticos. Por ejemplo, si eres un hombre de negocios astuto, significa que estás aprovechando oportunidades que tienes en tu negocio.
Llamamos superdotado (gifted), a una persona que nació con habilidades naturales superiores a la media. Y a la persona que logra desarrollar sus habilidades naturales a un alto nivel, talentoso (talented).
MODISMOS
Algunos modismos que puedes utilizar para describir a alguien inteligente (smart) son:
1. As sharp as a tack.
Si alguien es "as sharp as a tack", hace referencia a una persona extremadamente inteligente y perceptiva.
Por ejemplo:
My husband is as sharp as a tack, so he knows how to solve almost all the work problems.
His children are as sharp as a tack, just the same as their father.
2. A smart cookie.
"A smart cookie" se dice cuando una persona es inteligente y toma buenas decisiones. is a smart person who makes good decisions.
Por ejemplo:
Peter was a smart cookie and he started his own successful business.
She is such a smart cookie. I realized it after she told me about the problem I had.
3. To be nobody’s fool.
Hace referencia a una persona a la que no se le puede engañar fácilmente.
Por ejemplo:
My father got the manager of the store to refund his money, he’s nobody’s fool.
Be everyone’s friend and nobody’s fool.
CARACTERÍSTICAS NEGATIVAS
Y, ahora le toca el turno, a aquellas expresiones que se pueden utilizar para describir a aquellas personas que carecen de habilidades intelectuales. Generalmente los adjetivos utilizados son: stupid, foolish, half-witted, brainless, daft o dumb.
Y, ¿cuál es la diferencia entre estos adjetivos?
Se le llama a una persona “stupid” cuando ésta carece habilidad intelectual. Hacer algo estúpido es hacer algo sin pensar. Esta palabra es muy similar a “dumb”, pues esta se refiere a alguien ignorante (ignorant and/or unlearned).
Cuando a alguien se le dice “foolish or daft” no se le dice necesariamente que es estúpido. Estos adjetivos se utilizan para describir a alguien imprudente y que carece de buen juicio.
Si para describir a alguien utilizas “half-witted”, es porque piensas que es muy estúpido, tonto o irresponsable (very stupid, silly, or irresponsible).
En cuanto a “brainless”, se refiere a una persona sin cerebro, y tiene un significado más cercano a estúpido.
MODISMOS
Los modismos que puedes utilizar para llamar a alguien “stupid” son:
1. Missing brain cells.
Por ejemplo:
He went to the ATM in the middle of the night and got robbed; he must be really missing brain cells.
2. Brain dead.
Por ejemplo:
Some people are just brain dead and don’t understand the basic concepts of life.
3. Not the sharpest tool in the shed.
Por ejemplo:
Sadly, he is not the sharpest tool in the shed, you cannot trust him with complex tasks.
