INTRODUCCIÓN
En esta unidad vamos a ver algunos modismos y frases que puedes utilizar para hablar sobre estudios y aprendizaje. Seguro que conoces expresiones como "to fail/ pass an exam", "to study hard"… Pero hay más, así que hoy vamos a ver un vocabulario más complejo para hablar sobre este tema.
EXPRESIONES COLOQUIALES
En primer lugar, vas a ver palabras coloquiales que se usan para hablar sobre los estudiantes.
TIPOS DE ESTUDIANTES
Puedes usar diferentes palabras para hablar sobre distintos tipos de estudiantes:
-Straight A: para hablar de alguien que consigue la calificación “A”, que significa excelencia.
Por ejemplo:
I was a straight A student in primary school. It means that I was an excellent student who did all the homework and got mostly A marks when I was in primary school.
-Teacher’s pet: hace referencia a un estudiante que es el favorito del maestro y recibe un tratamiento especial.
Por ejemplo:
I don’t want to be a teacher’s pet because other students will despise me. It means that I don’t want to be likes by a teacher too much because that might generate hatred of other students towards me.
- Plodders, se utiliza para hablar de alguien que es muy trabajador y se esfuerza en sus estudios pero no es muy inteligente y normalmente hace las cosas con lentitud.
Por ejemplo:
Peter is a bit of a plodder, he finishes his homework, but he takes 3 hours to do it.
Y en la diversidad de un aula se encuentran también estudiantes débiles o con dificultades “struggling or weak students”. Estos estudiantes no tienen excelencia académica y normalmente obtienen malas calificaciones.
Por ejemplo:
Our teacher doesn’t know what to do with the struggling students, because they make it difficult for him to teach the whole class.
MODISMOS SOBRE PRUEBAS, CALIFICACIONES Y EXÁMENES
Uno de los modismos más conocidos para hablar sobre aprobar un examen con notas altas es "to pass with flying colors". Sinónimos de este modismo pueden ser: "to sail through o to breeze through”. Lo contrario a estas expresiones es el verbo "to bomb”, que significa suspender el examen.
Por ejemplo:
He is a straight A student, so he always passes with flying colors.
I didn’t have a chance to study the night before the exam, so I thought I was going to bomb it, but fortunately I was luck and I sailed through.
Dana managed to breeze through the Biology test because she studied for it.
También puedes utilizar “a piece of cake" o “a walk in the park”, que significa que fue muy fácil.
Por ejemplo:
This time exam was a piece of cake for me because I was ready for it.
James told me that we shouldn’t worry about passing this course, it’s a walk in the park.
MODISMOS SOBRE PENSAMIENTO
Uno de los modismos más comunes sobre pensamiento es "to figure something out”. Significa que solucionas un problema o descubres una respuesta a una pregunta.
Por ejemplo:
After thinking about this math equation for 2 weeks, he managed to figure out a solution.
We figured out the correct answer to this question before our teacher told us all about the topic.
- To put two and two together: significa que puedes adivinar la verdad sobre la situación basándote en lo que has escuchado y visto.
Por ejemplo:
I saw Jenny and Tom together at the party and then later during the work break. I put two plus two together, I think they are dating.
-How did you manage to pass the test without any previous knowledge?
-I just put two plus two together, the multiple choice questions were really easy to do.
Y la última por hoy es “to rack someone’s brain”, que significa que piensas mucho en algo.
Por ejemplo:
Danny racked his brain, but couldn’t remember what his boss told him at the meeting.
Mary tried to solve this equation, but no matter how hard she racked her brain, she couldn’t do it.

-How much of a student’s stress is caused by other students and how much is caused by the teachers / educational system?
-Is it more stressful to be a student or to be an adult? Why?
-What do you think are the main differences between Eastern and Western education systems?
